“Girls Can!” Brings Inspirational Messages from Sandra Day O’Connor, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, and Sally Ride to Young Girls
A new children’s picture book by author and father Rick Kupchella

Golden Valley, Minn. –- (November 17, 2004) –- GIRLS CAN! Make It Happen (TRISTAN Publishing; November 2004; $16.95), a new children’s book by Rick Kupchella, encourages young girls to believe in themselves with its inspiring message that they can do anything and be anything. Written in verse, this charming volume includes the stories of former “little girls” Sandra Day O’Connor, the first woman on the U.S. Supreme Court; Sally Ride, the first American woman astronaut; and Jackie Joyner-Kersee, an Olympic gold medalist in track and field. Marilyn Brown’s bright, bold full-color illustrations reinforce the book’s theme that girls have the power to make their dreams a reality. The book is targeted to children ages four- to eight-years-old.

Talking about what prompted him to write GIRLS CAN!, Rick Kupchella says, “The original idea came from being the father of two young daughters, Caroline, age eight, and Elizabeth, age five. My wife Leslie and I have worked hard to instill in them the belief that they can be anything they want to be. I was also driven by the conviction that establishing a fundamental value of reading in children is incredibly important.” Both Caroline and Elizabeth are depicted in the artwork for the book.

“Finding the right role models who exemplified the book’s message was also crucial to me. Sandra, Jackie, and Sally have inspired girls and women for years with their many great accomplishments,” said Kupchella. Each of these remarkable women spent time with Rick, sharing memories of growing up. Their personal stories, which encourage young girls to discover and pursue what they want to be, are incorporated into the book’s text.

With its vibrant pictures and delightful verse, GIRLS CAN! is an empowering must-read for young girls everywhere.
